Getting a Handle on the BYOD Environment

Although the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) trend can spur greater enterprise productivity as employees use their own smartphones and tablets at work, it can also bring new challenges to IT.

Employees need access to corporate applications, email, and documents from their personal devices, but IT teams need to implement security for those devices and be able to easily deploy, control, and administer any in-house resources those devices access.

To start with, IT must focus on securing browsers, documents and email. This can be done with apps that reside behind the corporate firewall. These apps provide their own highly secure encryption, eliminating the need for a VPN connection between mobile devices and servers. Internally developed mobile apps could be configured and delivered the same way, but with the addition of well-designed user access policies.

Using a centrally-managed approach, app updates can be pushed out to the mobile devices with no need for individual users to take action. Should a mobile device be lost or an employee leave the company, it is a simple matter for IT to reclaim these apps to prevent unauthorized use.
