Business Partners May Expose You to Cybercrime

An apparent criminal cyber-attack has been reported by Greenway Health, an IT and revenue cycle services provider based in Carrollton, Georgia. The company partners with over 10,000 organizations and 75,000 providers across more than medical 40 specialties to empower better patient healthcare.

The incident involved ransomware in which the attackers freeze access to data and offer to restore it in exchange for a ransom payment. The company says it is working with law enforcement, including the FBI.

The attack affected a limited number of the company’s customers. There is no evidence that any patient data has been exfiltrated or otherwise misused. Fortunately, the company had backup data and expects little or no data loss.

Although Greenway Health had built extensive safeguards into its products and services, the incident demonstrates a key disadvantage of large-scale shared hosted systems. In the shared IT environment, if one partner or client comes under attack, all the others potentially can become targets as well. Alternatively, when DataLink hosts an IT infrastructure, all client systems are isolated so that if one client is attacked, the others will remain unaffected.
